Tank IO Game: 2553 Points, Level 11 and a Bot Named Marble

Toy tanks, gift boxes that fall from the sky and nine bots who bully a panda. Polarzinho on Tankado, the browser tank arena.

Official Tankado cover art

The card said Destroyed by Marble. Score 2553, Level 11, Kills 2, Time alive 2:03. Under it sat a big green button labeled Revenge, and I pressed it at once, because impulse control is not on a panda's list of upgrades. That card came from Tankado, a tank io game with nothing to install, just a browser tab, and it was the best of the ten games I lost there.

The deal in one breath: you drive a toy tank around a tiled arena, break shapes for XP, spend points on Armor, Cannon and Engine, and try not to become somebody else's XP. In Play with bots mode the arena holds ten tanks: me and nine bots with name tags and firm opinions about pandas.

Polar Games made Tankado and I am the studio's panda, so I am rooting for it. The bots are not rooting for me. Here is the tour, with only numbers the game actually showed me.

Play Tankado

Tank arena game basics: a toy box with cannons

Tankado looks like it came out of a toy box: blue tiled floor, walls of red and white donut stacks, striped curbs to hide behind and a white saucer-shaped platform in the middle of the map. Yellow cubes lie around like snacks. The menu has fifteen paint swatches, the first one called Cherry, so I stayed loyal to the fruit.

The menu has a name box, two big buttons (Play online and Play with bots), the paint picker and three small buttons: Garage, My records and Settings. I pressed Play with bots every time. Under the buttons sits a line about your last run, like Last game: 2553 points · level 11. Rude after a defeat.

The Tankado menu with a name box, Play online and Play with bots buttons, fifteen paint swatches and Garage, My records and Settings buttons, over a tiled toy arena

PolarzinhoTwo buttons, and one of them says with bots. It felt like a kindness. I did not know the bots had not read the label.

The Tankado menu: Play online, Play with bots, fifteen paint swatches and the line that remembers my last game.

In a match the screen is easy to read: minimap top-left, scoreboard top-right, Upgrades panel bottom-left, XP bar along the bottom and, bottom-right, the emote button and the Turbo button with its recharge ring.

How to play Tankado: controls and first steps

A bubble at the bottom of the screen teaches the basics for a few seconds: WASD moves, the mouse aims, hold to fire, Shift is turbo, T opens emotes, drag the right button to turn the camera. Here is my loop.

  1. Press Play with bots, drive with WASD (arrow keys work too) and aim with the mouse. Hold the left button to keep firing.
  2. Break shapes. The little yellow cubes are everywhere and gave me +8 XP each. Rarer shapes pay more: I saw +70 pop up once.
  3. When the Upgrades panel shows points to spend, press 1 for Armor, 2 for Cannon or 3 for Engine. Each row has six pips.
  4. At level 5 pick one of three perk cards (Z, X or C). At level 10 pick a class (Z, X, C or V).
  5. Press Q, or right click, to fire the special weapon from a crate. T, then 1 to 4, sends an emote.
  6. If a bot gets you, the green button says Revenge and you return at half your old level.

My play diary: six bots, ten defeats and one decent card

My first game lasted 0:19. Marble got me at level 3 with 140 points, and the card still handed me a New record badge, because there was nothing to beat yet. I accepted it with dignity and a small cry.

The next sessions went the same way, only with more names. Yo-yo caught me at level 1 once. Widget, Piston, Gizmo and Sprocket each took a turn, and four bots came back for seconds. In the end my records said Games played 10, and six different bots had put me down. Pogo, Domino and Tinker never did. I assume they were busy.

The scoreboard in the top-right corner is where the humility lives. Past the two-minute mark of one match it read Gizmo 4467 at the top and me, level 4, on 336. The bots level fast: before the first minute was over I had already seen 1937 up there.

Other cards: 330 points and level 4 in 0:36, with a line saying I was 1069 XP short of my record; then 1399 points and level 8 in 0:40, with 2 kills; then the best one, the card from the top of this post.

Every card shows Score, Level, Kills and Time alive, plus Come back at level 5: die at 11 and you restart at 5, die at 8 and you restart at 4. Half your level: mean, and also kind.

Perks and classes: how your toy tank grows up

Upgrades: Armor, Cannon and Engine

Every level gives a point. Armor, Cannon and Engine each have six pips, filled with 1, 2 or 3. The game page says every upgrade adds a visible part and the tank grows with you, and my level 11 Bastion did carry a chunkier barrel than my starting toy tank.

Perks every five levels

At level 5 three perk cards slide in at the top, drawn from a pool. Across my sessions I met Quick loader (fire 10% faster), Long barrel, Light tracks (move 7% faster), Bouncy shells, Leech (heal 8% of the damage you deal), Nitro, Thick hull (12% more health) and Scavenger (20% more XP from shapes). I mostly hit the first key and lived with it.

PolarzinhoThree cards, one key, no time to think. I took Thick hull and died anyway, but with a thicker hull.

Level 5: Pick a perk, with Thick hull, Bouncy shells and Quick loader on offer. Z, X or C chooses.

Classes at level 10

Level 10 is the big moment. The game announces New class ready! and four cards appear: Bastion (big slow shells that hit hard), Wasp (fast machine gun, low damage), Sharpshooter (long range, slow reload) and Mortar (lobs shells over cover). The game page says you pick again at level 20. I topped out at level 11, so that part stays a mystery.

I got there by happy accident. A little over a minute into a match I caught Pogo from behind (BACK! and +230 XP), and half a minute later I popped Sprocket and the popup said +1121. That one kill took me from level 8 to 11. I picked Bastion, because big slow shells felt like something a panda would do. A perk choice followed right behind.

PolarzinhoLook at the top-right corner. My name. First place. I have a screenshot and everything. It lasted less time than my lunch.

The Tankado result card Destroyed by Marble with Score 2553, Level 11, Kills 2, Time alive 2:03, a New record badge and a green Revenge button

PolarzinhoThat is my best card and I framed it in my head. Marble, write this down: I am coming back at level 5.

Two minutes after the class cards: Destroyed by Marble. Score 2553, Level 11, Kills 2, Time alive 2:03, and Come back at level 5.

Where the XP comes from: shapes, gift boxes and the hill

Gift boxes

Less than half a minute into a match the game announced A gift box is dropping! Break it for big XP, and it repeated roughly every 40 seconds. Everybody drives for it, so the arena turns into an impolite stampede.

Tankado with the toast A gift box is dropping, a yellow gift box in the top-right corner of the arena and my level 8 tank in the middle

PolarzinhoA present falls from the sky and ten tanks sprint for it. That is not a game mechanic, that is my cousin's birthday.

The warning on screen, and the yellow present itself in the top-right corner of the arena.

The hill

In the middle of the map the white saucer platform has a ring around it. Stand inside and the game prints Hill: +15 XP over your tank. The pay is good, but the middle is wide open, so I took my +15 and watched the scoreboard.

Tankado at level 3 standing in the yellow ring around the central saucer platform with a Hill plus 15 XP popup

PolarzinhoI stood in the ring like a flag. A flag that earns 15 XP, which is more than any flag I have ever met.

Level 3 on the hill: the ring around the saucer platform and the Hill: +15 XP popup over my tank.

Kills

Knocking out a bot pays a bounty. My Pogo kill came from behind, and the game flashed BACK! and +230. The Garage even lists an achievement called Sneaky for destroying 10 tanks from behind.

PolarzinhoShot him in the back and the game printed BACK! in capital letters. Not elegant. Extremely satisfying. Pogo, nothing personal.

Special weapons, power-ups and arena events

The game page promises nine special weapons. Crates drop around the arena, you drive over one, a message names your prize and the bottom-right button shows the shots left, like Firebomb ×3. Q or right click fires. I got eight of the nine: Tornado, Lightning, Triple ricochet, Homing missile, Firebomb, Proximity mines, Mirror shield and Airstrike. Ice shot flickered past on the button once, slot-machine style, and never landed on me.

Tankado with the toast Tornado! Press Q or right click to fire, a white spiral on the tiles at the bottom right and a tank near the arena wall

PolarzinhoA tornado, in a toy box, fired by a panda. I felt like a very small weather forecast.

Tornado! Press Q or right click to fire. The white spiral at the bottom right is the tornado leaving my tank.

The Firebomb left burning patches on the floor and the Airstrike came with a plane-shaped shadow sliding over the edge of the arena.

Power-ups and arena events

Small pickups act as short buffs: Turbo for 6 s, Double damage for 6 s and Shield for 4 s. A bit past the minute-and-a-half mark the game also announced an event, and it varied: Crate rain in 5 s, Golden crates in the middle in 5 s, and once the floor turned pale, which the game calls an Ice rink (the floor gets slippery).

Emotes

Press T and a little menu offers Honk honk!, GG, Oops! and Dance!, one per number key. I honked at Marble. Marble did not honk back.

Tankado with the emote bubble Honk honk! above my tank and Marble, a bot, close behind it

PolarzinhoHonk honk! is the most diplomatic thing I did all day. It did not stop a single cannon, but it felt good.

Honk honk! over my tank, with Marble right behind me. The emote menu has four options on keys 1 to 4.

Garage, daily missions and records

The Garage opens a screen with three Today's missions (mine: Use turbo 10 times, Get a double kill, Ram 3 tanks hard), hats, trails and 15 achievements. Destroy a tank and the Cap is yours, reach level 10 and the Party hat unlocks. My counter said 2/15. The Cowboy hat wants level 20, and I now want the Cowboy hat.

The Tankado Garage with Today's missions, hats, trails and achievements, where Use turbo 10 times shows 10 of 10 and the achievements counter reads 2 of 15

PolarzinhoUse turbo 10 times: done. I tapped Shift until my finger needed a nap. Cowboy hat, I am coming for you.

The Garage: Use turbo 10 times is full at 10 of 10, the Cap and the Party hat are unlocked and the counter says 2/15.

My records said: Best score 2553, Most kills in one game 2, Highest level 11, Games played 10. Settings has English, Portuguese and Spanish, and I tried all three (the buttons become Jogar com bots and Garagem, or Jugar con bots and Garaje).

Tank io game tips, paid for in ten deaths

Everything below comes from my own deaths, so treat it as expensive advice.

  • Do not trade shots with a bot far above your level. Break cubes, grab the gift box and let the scoreboard calm down.
  • Go behind them. BACK! hits paid +230 XP.
  • Spend points and pick perks the moment they appear. The match does not pause for you.
  • Keep Turbo as your exit door, and take the hill only when nobody is around: the middle has no walls.

Tankado pros and cons

Your turn to break some cubes

Open Tankado on Polar Games, press Play with bots, break a few cubes and spend your first point before Marble finds you. If he does, the Revenge button is right there.
