Rhythm games: how they work and where to play
The types of music games, the classics everyone knows, tips to improve your timing and a rhythm game to play right now in your browser. Polarzinho explains, headphones on.

Music games are games you play to the beat: press, play, dance or dodge when the rhythm says so. I wear headphones all day, so this one is my topic.
Here you will find how rhythm games work, the types of music games, the classics everyone has heard of, tips to improve your timing and a rhythm game you can play right now in your browser.
How rhythm games work
Notes come toward you and you have to hit each one at the exact moment. The game measures the gap between your press and the perfect time and grades it: perfect, great, good or miss.
- Timing: the closer to the right moment, the higher the score.
- Combo: hits in a row multiply your points.
- Long notes: you have to hit them and hold until the end.
- Difficulty: more notes, faster, across more lanes.

PolarzinhoI got a PERFECT and stopped to admire it. The next note flew past. That is rhythm: no time to show off.
Types of music games
- Lane games: notes fall down columns and you press the key for each one. This is the guitar game format.
- Dance games: arrows on the floor or full-body movement.
- Tap games: tiles you tap on screen in time, like phone piano games.
- Instrument games: drums, guitar or keyboard, real or toy.
- Hybrids: rhythm mixed with another genre, like dungeon crawling or combat, where every action has to land on the beat.
Classic music games
- Dance Dance Revolution (1998): the floor-arrow dance game that started in arcades.
- Guitar Hero (2005): made falling notes in lanes famous, with a toy guitar.
- Rock Band (2007): the whole band, with guitar, bass, drums and mic.
- Just Dance (2009): full-body dancing, copying the dancer on screen.
- osu!: a free PC rhythm game known for its huge community.
- Beat Saber: rhythm in virtual reality, slicing blocks to the beat.
- Friday Night Funkin' (2020): an indie that started in the browser and became a hit.
Tips to get better at rhythm games
- Watch the hit line, not the top of the screen.
- Start on a low difficulty and only move up once you hit almost everything.
- Keep your fingers resting on the keys.
- If the game has a latency setting, use it. Wireless headphones and TVs can add delay.
- Replay the same song. Learning the pattern is part of the game.
Riffvolt: a rhythm game in your browser
Riffvolt is the Polar Games rhythm game. Four lanes, played on the D, F, J and K keys or a controller, twelve songs and four difficulties. In campaign mode, the band goes from a garage to a packed stadium.
- Fill the ROCK meter and overdrive starts on its own: a light show on stage that ends on your first miss.
- Online for up to four, each player on their own lane.
- A photosensitive mode that tones down lights, flashes and lightning.
- The whole game in 14 languages.

PolarzinhoHolding long notes is the hardest part when you have paws. Still, a 4 combo. I will take it.
