Word Puzzle Adventure: Lumora Hides a Secret in Every Board

Clues across, a secret word down the middle and four helpers who charge crystals. Polarzinho climbs four islands and a boss.

Official Lumora cover art

Level 6 of Lumora, three rows solved, and the golden column already read F, O, R. This word puzzle adventure offered me 10 crystals if I guessed the secret word right then, instead of finishing the board. I typed FOREST, pressed Enter and watched the column fill itself in, like I had planned the whole thing. I had not. I had a hunch and a very serious face.

That is Lumora, a clue word game you open in a browser tab, with no download. Every level is a grid with one clue per row. You type the answers, tiles that share a letter feed each other, and one golden column spells a secret word.

I played the first five levels, the last of them a boss that closes the first world, a chunk of level 6, the daily level, the word of the day and four minigames. Polar Games made Lumora, so yes, I am biased. I also paid for help in level 4 and got one star for it.

What is Lumora? A clue word game with a secret in every board

Picture a small crossword that moved to a cloud. Each row of the grid is one word. A panel on the right shows the clue, labeled CLUE 1/6, with arrows to jump between clues and a keyboard you can tap or type on. No black squares, no across and down: every row is an answer, and the golden column is the bonus.

Boards grow as you climb. Level 1 is 6 by 6, level 2 is 7 by 7, levels 3 and 4 are 8 by 8, and the boss level on island 5 is 8 columns by 9 rows with nine clues.

If you came from our other word games, here is the difference. Solitaire Links sorts word cards by category and Letter River traces answers through loose tiles. In Lumora you read a clue and type the word.

Lumora home screen with a floating island, a green Play button for level 1, Daily level, Word of the day and Secret message cards and a bottom bar with Crew, Gift, Lumário, Trophies, Album, Shop and Wardrobe

PolarzinhoA floating island, a lantern and a Play button that pulses at me like a dog at walk time. I pressed it. My tea got cold anyway.

The home screen: Play on the right, three daily cards under it and the bottom bar with Crew, Gift, Lumário, Trophies, Album, Shop and Wardrobe.

How to play Lumora: type the clue, follow the numbers

  1. Press Play. The map opens on your current island. Tap it and press Start.
  2. Read the clue and type the answer with your keyboard or the on-screen keys. Enter or the arrows jump to another clue, Backspace erases and Esc pauses.
  3. Watch the numbers on the tiles. Two tiles with the same number share one letter, so solving a word drops letters into other rows.
  4. Keep an eye on the golden column. Its letters spell a secret word.
  5. Fill every row, or guess the secret early, and a Secret found card shows your stars.

My right answers locked in the moment the last letter landed, no Enter needed. A combo counter climbs with each word in a row, and cheers like Superb!, Amazing! and Stellar! pop over the board.

Level 1 of Lumora after the first word, ORCHID, with numbered tiles in the empty rows and a bubble saying numbered tiles share a letter

PolarzinhoA 2 here and another 2 down there are the same letter. Then you notice row five has been whispering to row two this whole time and nobody invited me to the gossip.

Level 1 after the first word. The bubble says it all: numbered tiles share a letter.

Guess the secret word early for extra crystals

Every golden column spells a secret: CLOUDS in level 1, RAINBOW in level 2, MOONBEAM in level 3, LANTERNS in level 4. Each comes with a one-line hint on the Secret found card, like "A bridge of seven colors between islands."

Above the column sits a keyhole medal. Tap it and a window called Guess the secret opens, with one dot per letter and the line Guess early for more crystals. With an empty board in level 6 it said +15 right now. With three rows solved it said +10.

The Guess the secret window in Lumora level 6 with the letters F, O, R and three empty dots, the word FOREST typed in the box and a note offering +10 crystals

PolarzinhoF, O, R and three dots. My brain said FOREST, my paws typed it, the dots became letters. Please applaud quietly, I get shy.

Level 6, three rows solved: F, O, R, three dots and +10 right now.

The boss level hides two words in one nine-row column. After four rows the golden letters read D, A, W, N and I whispered "dawn" to my tea. Five more rows added L, I, G, H, T, and the card said DAWN LIGHT.

Lumora levels and worlds: four islands and a boss

Level 1 gave me ORCHID, BALLET, GROUND, CRUISE, MIDDLE and CASTLE. One clue, "Halfway point; the center," fits both MIDDLE and CENTER, and the shared tiles picked MIDDLE for me. Level 3 asked for a "Tiny fish that swims upright." I stared at that for a while, because a fish standing up felt like a dad joke. It was SEAHORSE.

Level 4 opened with BALLOONS, and I tried three helpers: Luma, Nuvi and Zuzu. My crystals went from 87 to 78, and the result card showed one star and a smaller total. Levels 1 to 3, the boss and the daily level were three stars and Perfect, all without help. I do not know the exact rule, only what the screens showed.

Island 5 says Boss level: "A bigger board and a two-word secret." The board is 8 columns by 9 rows, the clue card turns gold, and the first clue was "The quality of being friendly, caring and generous." KINDNESS is a boss that asks politely. I finished with three stars, Perfect and a Stellar! over the last word, BIRTHDAY.

The Lumora boss level finished: a nine-row board with KINDNESS, VACATION, SNOWFALL, MOUNTAIN, CHILDREN, MEDICINE, LANGUAGE, ALPHABET and BIRTHDAY, a golden column spelling DAWN LIGHT and a Stellar! pop-up

PolarzinhoNine rows, a gold clue card and a Stellar! on my last word. I told my tea. It stayed supportive.

The boss level, finished: nine rows, a golden column and a Stellar! over BIRTHDAY.

After the boss the map flips to Misty Grove, "Mossy islands drifting through soft rain and fog," with a star track at 13 of 18. Behind it sits Tidal Lagoon, locked under "A peek at what is coming," and a third world called Hanging Garden.

Lumora helpers: Luma, Nuvi, Bru and Zuzu

Hints cost crystals, the currency you collect by playing. The Crew screen lists every helper with the power and the price:

  • Luma, the firefly, 1 crystal: reveals one letter of your choice. Tap her, then tap a tile.
  • Nuvi, the cloudling, 3 crystals: sprinkles 3 random letters on the board.
  • Bru, the owl sage, 6 crystals: solves the selected word instantly.
  • Zuzu, the comet fox, 5 crystals: reveals the first letter of every word left.

Helpers have upgrade levels, and level 3 takes one crystal off the price. Two more silhouettes sit locked, one until level 10 and one until level 30.

PolarzinhoI came for the words and stayed for the owl. Bru looks like he knows what I searched last night.

PolarzinhoB, D, S, B, S, C, D, P down the left side. The worst license plate in the world, and it still helped.

Level 4 after Zuzu: the first letter of every row, B, D, S, B, S, C, D and P, lands down the left side.

The Lumário and its minigames: a word puzzle that quizzes you back

Every word you find drops into the Lumário as a jar with a firefly inside. After four levels mine said 33 fireflies. Jars grow in four steps: Unlit is revealed with help, Spark is found on the board, Bright is right in the games on 2 days and Star is right 4 times over 3 days.

Under "Play with your words" you get minigames built from your own words, six per round. Firefly Hunt: tap the letters in order. Letter Rain: catch the missing letters as they fall. Bru's Quiz: pick the word that matches the clue. Comet Race: find the word that fits the rule. A weekly Crew Crossword uses only your words, and Pond Pairs and Hot Letter wait behind levels 11 and 31.

Firefly Hunt, Letter Rain and Bru's Quiz ended at 6 of 6 right first time. Comet Race ended at 5 of 6, and the guilty round was "Has a double letter." I picked HEADACHE, because mine was starting, while PASSPORT and its two S sat right there. The results card tagged it "Back soon," which reads like a threat.

PolarzinhoFive checks and one Back soon next to PASSPORT. The word will return. So will my dignity, in about a week.

Comet Race results: 5 of 6, and PASSPORT with its little Back soon.

Daily level, word of the day and the extras

The Daily level card carries a +20 tag and opens a fresh 6 by 6 board with the date on top. I finished it with three stars and Perfect, and the card switched to "Done today." No spoilers from me.

The word of the day is a five-letter guessing game in six tries. Tiles turn gold for the right spot, purple for a letter that is in the word somewhere else and gray for a letter that is not there. A new word arrives each day, the same for everyone. I solved today's in 3 tries, and the stats card showed 1 played, 100% win rate and a streak of 1. I will not tell you the word.

The word of the day explains itself with three examples: P in the right spot, O elsewhere, R missing.
  • Secret message: hide a word in the golden column and dare a friend to find it. It takes up to 9 letters and the buttons say Create code and I got a code.
  • Daily gift: a seven-day ladder from +5 on day one to +30 on day seven.
  • Trophies: 17 achievements, from First light to Full crew.
  • Album: every secret word unlocks a postcard with a fun fact. CLOUDS says a fluffy cloud can weigh around 500 tonnes and still float.
  • Wardrobe: hats and bows for each helper, priced in crystals. Luma gave me a bow.

Lumora tips: solve more clues with fewer crystals

Count the row before you type. "Feeling very eager and happy" in a seven-letter row is EXCITED, not ECSTATIC. Let a half-spelled secret pull you forward, so every empty row has a letter waiting. And spend crystals on one helper, not four: my star count fell with my crystals in level 4.

Is Lumora for you? Languages, devices and one honest gripe

Lumora suits anyone who likes crosswords and word riddles but wants something lighter, with a story map and cute helpers. Settings has a corner for parents with controls for words, progress and purchases. The studio lists desktop and mobile. I used a desktop browser and a real keyboard.

You can switch between Portuguese, English and Spanish in Settings, and each language has its own adventure. When I switched to Portuguese, the map started again at island 1 and the first clue asked for the yellow fruit monkeys love. In Spanish the on-screen keyboard grew an Ñ key. My crystals came along. My screenshots are English because that was my longest run.

The gripe is small. While a tutorial bubble is open, the keyboard waits for you to press Got it! or Space, and my first attempt to type through one went nowhere. And a clue can fit more than one word, like MIDDLE and CENTER, so read the shared tiles before you commit.

Lumora FAQ

Does Lumora need a download or an account?

No download, and I never created an account to play. There is a shop for crystals and looks, but crystals also come from levels, the daily gift and the minigames. I did not buy anything.

How do you guess the secret word early?

Tap the keyhole medal above the golden column, type the word and press Guess. In level 6 the bonus said +15 with an empty board and +10 with three rows done.

Is there a daily puzzle?

Three: a daily level, a five-letter word of the day and a weekly Crew Crossword in the Lumário.

Lumora pros and cons

Go light the first island

My scoreboard: four levels, a boss, a secret guessed with +10 on the table and one comet round I would rather not discuss. Lumora is waiting on Polar Games. Start level 1, and when a clue stops you cold, think of my fish that stands up.
