Word game online: can a panda trace 12 levels of Letter River?
A river of tiles, a clue panel and an otter sipping juice while I sweat over three-letter words.

Letter River is a word game online, and the first clue it threw at me was "Massage with your hands." I am a panda. I have been training for this question my whole life. Three letters, one drag across the board, R, U, B, and the tiles lit up blue like I had opened a tap.
That is the whole idea. You get a board of loose letters and a panel of clues, and you trace each answer through the tiles with your finger or mouse. I never saw a timer or a lives counter, just me, a board and an otter in sunglasses floating on his back with a drink. I took it personally.
I played the first twelve levels in my browser, nothing to download, and came out with a chest of coins and a pirate otter. Here is how it works and what each hint does.
What is Letter River? A word game online where every tile has one job
Letter River is a letter puzzle with one tidy rule: every tile on the board belongs to exactly one answer. The game builds each board so it always works out, so you can never paint yourself into a dead end. Picture a crossword that fell into a river: instead of writing answers into boxes, you hunt for them inside a jumble of letters.
Level 1 is a tiny 4 by 3 board with four clues. By level 12 it is 6 by 6 with six clues.
You can turn corners, but never cut across
A path moves one tile at a time, up, down, left or right, and it can bend as often as it likes. No diagonals. Answers can also run backwards: on level 1 the word DRY sat in the top row as Y, R, D, so I traced it from right to left. Lesson one: words in a grid do not read the way you read.
How to play Letter River, step by step
Level 1 teaches by example. A little hand glides across the tiles and a bubble says "Drag across the answer's letters." After that you are on your own:
- Read a clue in the panel on the right. The one outlined in teal is the active clue.
- Press on the first letter of the answer and drag through the tiles. The letters you pick show up in a row above the board.
- Let go on the last letter. If you were right, the word pops up with an exclamation mark, its letters drop under the clue and its tiles turn into a colored stream.
- Took a wrong turn? Slide back over the last tile and it un-picks itself.
- Solve every clue and the level ends with stars, coins and a button for the next one.

PolarzinhoTwelve tiles, four words and a tutorial hand that looks friendlier than my own paws. I nodded like I knew every answer. I did not, until I started dragging.
My first 12 levels in Letter River, one river bend at a time
Levels 1 and 2: easing in
Level 1 asked for RUB, DRY, LID and JET ("Fast plane in the sky"). When the last word landed, a banner shouted "Pure talent!" with +10 and a +6 combo, and the level card paid +16 coins. I started with 300 coins and level 1 took me to 336, daily reward included.
Level 2 grows the board to 4 by 4 and brings SHARK ("Toothy fin in the water"), HOOP, GOLF and FIR. I let go one tile early on SHARK and spelled SHAR, a word that exists only in the language of sad pandas. The shark and I looked at each other. Nobody got eaten, but I felt judged.
Level 3: meet the Firefly
Until level 3 the three hint buttons at the bottom were locked, with badges that said Lv 3, Lv 6 and Lv 9. Then the first one woke up: a glowing bug called the Firefly, which shows the length of an answer plus its first and last letter. The first try costs nothing. I used it on "Finger you raise for a like" and the clue card showed a T, three empty boxes and a B. THUMB, obviously. Pandas even have a pseudo-thumb, so it felt personal. From then on the Firefly costs 80 coins.

PolarzinhoA T, a B and three empty boxes. That is not a spoiler, that is a love letter.
Level 6: the Drop lights a letter
Level 6 wakes the Drop, which lights one letter of an answer on the board itself. The first try costs nothing, later it costs 120 coins. On this 5 by 5 board (RANCH, LIBRARY, WINDOW and KETCHUP, "Red tomato squirt for fries") it lit an R in the top right corner: the first letter of RANCH, waiting for me to walk in from the right.

PolarzinhoOne bend down at the R and my paw hides half the board. I should have brought a smaller hand.
Level 9: the Current, and a new landscape
Level 9 unlocks the Current, the big hint: it solves a whole word for you, and after the first try it costs 250 coins. I used mine on "Whole uncut bread" and LOAF drew itself in pink in the lower part of the board. The sunny golden valley of levels 1 to 8 also gave way to a misty pine forest, which the map calls Pine Woods.

PolarzinhoA hint that solves a whole word. I used it once and told the otter nothing.
Level 12: the boss with a golden crown
Level 12 gets a crown on the level pill and a 6 by 6 board with six clues: DELIGHT, CAFE, YAWN, DRAW, SHEPHERD and BOOKSHELF ("Board lined with novels"), which snakes through nine tiles.

PolarzinhoNine letters. Nine. I counted the tiles twice because I could not believe the river kept going.
When the last word dropped, the card paid +20 coins and a chest showed up. "Spring complete!" it said, with +150 coins and two buttons: Double and Collect. Of course I pressed Double. The chest said +300 and left me with Collect, which I also pressed, because I am a panda and not a fool.

Let the leftovers finish the board
Because every tile belongs to one answer, the last word of a level is a gift. On level 1, after RUB, DRY and LID, only J, E and T were left standing. Three tiles, one path, JET. I did not even read the clue.
Start with the short answers
Three and four letter words clear the most tiles per drag. Take them first and the long answers have fewer places to hide.
Which hint, and when
The Firefly is for when you know the word but not where it lives. The Drop is for when you cannot find the first tile. The Current is for when you have stared long enough to know every tile by name. Spend the cheapest first.
Keyboard, settings and other corners of the menu
On desktop you can also play with the keyboard. The controls list says type the answer, use the arrow keys to switch clues and press Shift plus F for full screen. I tried the first two on level 13, where the first clue was "Seabird with a colorful beak." I typed P, U, F and the tiles lit up a bent path by themselves. Finishing PUFFIN moved the game on to the next clue.

PolarzinhoThree letters typed and the tiles lit up like a pianist had walked by.
Settings has switches for Sounds, Music and Vibration, plus Colorblind mode, Reduce motion and Large letters, and three language buttons: Português, English and Español. Each language has its own words and clues, not a translation of the English ones: level 1 in Portuguese asked me for a "Fruta em cacho que vira vinho," and in Spanish for a "Diente de olor fuerte en la cocina."
Stars, a chest track, a map and a wardrobe
Every finished level hands you stars, coins and a small river-shaped track that leads to the chest: 5 out of 12 after level 5, 11 out of 12 after level 11, and level 12 opened the chest.

PolarzinhoThree stars and a river that points at a chest. I know exactly where I am going.
On the map, each world is eight docks. Golden Valley read 0 out of 8 when I started. After level 12 I was parked in Pine Woods, World 2, with four docks done and three little stars under each.

The wardrobe is where I lost an evening. Customize opens Hats, Glasses and Clothes tabs, and the label says one new item per level. With level 13 waiting I had six hats, five pairs of glasses and six outfits unlocked, while Winter, Royal, Pajamas and Captain still sat behind padlocks. I dressed the otter as a pirate with aviators and a sailor shirt, hit "Wear in game," and he floated back to the home screen looking better than any panda ever has.

PolarzinhoA pirate otter in aviators. He was already more relaxed than me, and now he is more stylish too. I am fine.
Daily reward, streak and the wheel
A streak screen greets you with the otter holding a flame and a line that says come back tomorrow to keep it alive. The daily reward ladder starts at 20 coins on day 1 and climbs to 100 on day 6, with a chest on day 7. The home screen also has a River Wheel: I spun it once and landed on 40 coins.
Is Letter River for you? Honest notes before you jump in
It is a calm game. Wrong guesses cost nothing, I never saw a timer and the clues speak plain language. The first boards are very kind, and the real puzzle starts around level 6, when the grid grows to 5 by 5 and the streams bend like river snakes. If you like crosswords or word searches but hate staring at an empty grid, this sits right between them.
My honest gripe: the clues can be sneaky. "Seabird with a colorful beak" is obvious once you see PUFFIN, but until then your brain offers parrot, toucan and one very confident penguin.

Yes. I opened it on Polar Games, pressed Play and started, with no download, account or name to type. Its page lists desktop and mobile as supported.
Can I play Letter River in Portuguese or Spanish?
Yes. Settings has Português, English and Español, each with its own words and clues.
What do the three hints do?
