The three types of irony explained with easy examples, plus the difference between irony and sarcasm, with examples from daily life, movies and games.

Great: the internet dropped right on the final level. Nobody thinks that is great, which is exactly why the sentence is ironic.

Irony is saying the opposite of what you mean, or when things turn out the opposite of what you expect. There are three types, and sarcasm is its sharper cousin.

Verbal irony

Saying the opposite of what you mean, trusting the listener to get it.

  • "What a beautiful day!" (in a storm)
  • "I loved waiting two hours in line."
  • "Wow, that was fast!" (to someone who took forever)
  • "Thanks for being so on time!" (to someone who was late)

Situational irony

When the opposite of what everyone expected happens.

  • A fire station burns down.
  • A traffic officer gets a parking ticket.
  • You carry an umbrella all day and it only rains when you forget it.
  • You save coins all level, and the next enemy can only be beaten without spending anything.

Dramatic irony

When the audience knows something a character does not.

  • In "Romeo and Juliet", the audience knows Juliet is only sleeping, but Romeo thinks she is dead.
  • In a horror movie, we see the monster behind the door, and the character opens it anyway.
  • In a game, you see the trap on the map, and your character walks right into it because you pressed the wrong button.

Irony or sarcasm?

Sarcasm is verbal irony meant to mock or criticize. All sarcasm is ironic, but not all irony is sarcastic.

  • Gentle irony: "Nice warm weather" (on a freezing day)
  • Sarcasm: "Wow, real genius, huh?" (to mock someone who made a mistake)
