Countries that start with every letter, A to Z
Stuck on W under Country? There isn’t one. Polarzinho went around the whole map and wrote the A to Z list, with the tricky letters explained.

Country is the category that separates the people who paid attention in geography class from the people who doodled pandas in their notebooks. I doodled pandas. So I wrote this list of countries that start with every letter, A to Z, covering the world’s independent countries.
Some letters have dozens of countries; others have one, or none at all. I list them all, and for the letters with no country I explain what to do.
How to use this list in Stop
Country is part of the Classic theme in Polar Games’ online Stop. You can also build your own category list.
Stop! only draws letters that have known answers in the round’s categories, and a letter never repeats in the same match. Learn at least one “forgotten” country per letter: a unique answer scores more than a repeated one.

Countries that start with W and X
No independent country starts with W or X in English. Western Sahara is sometimes mentioned for W, but it is a disputed territory, not a country recognized by the United Nations. Agree on it with your group before playing.
Countries that start with Y and Z
- Y: Yemen
- Z: Zambia, Zimbabwe
A real round

PolarzinhoGreece is what everyone writes for G. Next time I’m going with Guinea-Bissau, just to see their faces.
Does any place count? The classic scoring arguments
Do England, Scotland and Wales count?
They are part of the United Kingdom. Many groups accept them, since they are called countries in sports and in everyday speech, but they are not independent states. Agree on it first.
Does a city or a state count?
Not under Country. Only independent countries count unless your group plays a broader “place” category.
