Word Search HTML5 Game: Source Code and Languages to Check

Themes, word lists, source code and browser needs of a finished word search game, using Aurora Words as the example.

Official Aurora Words cover art

Word search is one of the most played puzzle formats, and a word search game is easy to imitate badly. A grid that places words in an obvious pattern, a thin word list, or a selection that misreads diagonal drags will show up within the first minute of play.

Aurora Words is a finished browser word search with 35 themes, a 15-level campaign and a daily puzzle. This guide covers what to check in the themes, the word lists, the source code and the browser requirements, so you can judge any word search game the same way.

Themes and levels: count what your project needs

Aurora Words includes 35 themes, a 15-level campaign, a daily puzzle, combos and stars. A theme is a set of words the player searches for, so the number of themes is the number of distinct word sets your audience will see.

Count the themes and levels your project needs, rather than the total on a listing. A campaign of 15 levels is a good length for a short session, while a daily puzzle is a reason to come back.

Word lists are where templates differ most

Ask how many entries each language has and whether the list is in the language your players read. The edition lists more than 1,000 word entries for each of its ten interface languages.

A list that is simply translated from English tends to show in the first few puzzles, with words that feel odd to a native reader. A list written for the language will have shorter, more natural words and themes that make sense locally.

Audio and the narrator

The narrator speaks English, Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish, and other languages fall back to English. Decide before you buy whether that fallback is acceptable for your audience, because a narrator in the wrong language is noticeable at once.

Source code and what you can change

The source is readable TypeScript with tests, built on Phaser 3.90. The game folder is ready to host, with local artwork, audio and fonts. Rebuilding with Vite is optional, and only needed if you change the TypeScript source.

Word lists are plain JSON, one set per language. You can change words, add themes or add a language without touching the game logic. A configuration file sets the starting language, the daily puzzle, the combo time and the name used for saved progress, without a rebuild.

  • Are the word lists separate from the game logic?
  • Do the tests cover the grid and the selection?
  • Are third-party licence notices included?

Browser and hosting requirements

The edition needs a current browser with JavaScript and audio support. The listing names Safari 16.4 or newer among them. It runs as static files on HTTP(S) hosting and needs no database or author account.

What the price leaves out

Aurora Words has no cloud saves, online ranking, real-money purchases or advertising SDK. Progress is saved in the current browser. Native apps, hosting and custom development are not included.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change the words or add a theme?

Yes. Word lists are plain JSON, one set per language, so you can change words, add themes or add a language.

Do I need to build the game?

No. Upload the contents of game/ to HTTP(S) hosting. Rebuilding is needed only if you edit the TypeScript source.

Where is progress saved?

Locally, in the current browser.

Who should buy a word search template

A word search template suits a language-learning site, a school or family project, or a studio that wants a themed puzzle game it can reskin. It fits when the themes and word lists match your audience. For a single one-off puzzle, a printable may be enough.
