In Plop! you merge fruit inside a blender. Fruit is one of the parts of a plant, the one that holds the seeds. So what are the others?

Here are the six main parts, what each one does, the parts of a flower and a list of which part of the plant you eat in common foods.

The six parts of a plant

  • Roots: hold the plant in the soil and take in water and minerals.
  • Stem: holds the plant up and carries sap, with water and nutrients, between the roots and the leaves.
  • Leaves: where photosynthesis happens, and where the plant also exchanges gases with the air.
  • Flower: the reproductive organ of plants that have flowers.
  • Fruit: grows from the flower, protects the seeds and helps spread them.
  • Seed: holds the embryo of a new plant.

Parts of a flower

  • Sepals: on the outside, they protect the bud before it opens.
  • Petals: the colorful parts, which help attract insects.
  • Stamens: the male part, where the pollen is.
  • Pistil: the female part, which has the ovary. After fertilization, the ovary becomes the fruit.

Two kinds of roots

  • Taproot: one thick main root that grows straight down, with smaller roots branching off it. Examples: beans and carrots.
  • Fibrous root: many thin roots of similar size that look like a head of hair. Examples: corn and grass.

Which part of the plant do you eat?

  • Root: carrots and beets.
  • Stem: potatoes and sugarcane.
  • Leaf: lettuce and kale.
  • Flower: cauliflower and broccoli.
  • Fruit: tomatoes, pumpkins and oranges.
  • Seed: beans, corn and peas.
